October is the month Austin sells out. The weather finally breaks, ACL Festival takes over Zilker Park for two weekends, the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix fills the city for another, and Longhorns home games stack the Saturdays in between. If you’re coming for any of it, the two things that decide your trip are booked months ahead: the tickets and the beds. Here’s how the month works, from hosts whose October calendar is the first to fill every year.
The three Octobers
ACL Festival. Austin City Limits runs across two consecutive weekends at Zilker Park, with largely the same lineup each weekend. Zilker is just west of downtown across the river; there’s no meaningful parking, so everyone arrives by shuttle, bike, or a long-ish walk from wherever they’re staying. Weekend One typically sells out first; Weekend Two is the sleeper pick for slightly easier logistics.
The Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix. Circuit of the Americas is southeast of the city, about 25–40 minutes from central Austin depending on traffic — and race weekend traffic is real. The move is to stay central, enjoy the city at night (the race crowd fills Rainey and downtown), and budget serious time for the drive or shuttle out to the track each day.
Longhorns football. Home-game Saturdays put 100,000 people around the UT campus north of downtown. If your trip isn’t about the game, check the schedule anyway — it moves restaurant waits and rideshare prices citywide.
When to book
For ACL and F1 weekends: as soon as you have tickets, book the stay — three to six months out is normal, and central places for eight are the first thing gone. Non-event October weekends are merely busy; you can book those weeks out, not months.
Where to stay in October
- For ACL: anywhere central with a reasonable path to Zilker — south of the river (Zilker, Bouldin, South Lamar) walks or bikes in; downtown and East Austin ride the shuttles and rideshares. Avoid staying far north; the nightly cross-town commute erodes the weekend.
- For F1: central beats trackside. The circuit has little around it; central Austin has the restaurants, the after-parties, and the airport between you and the track.
- For football: Hyde Park and Mueller are closest to the stadium; central-east works fine with a short ride.
Our East Side house threads all three: minutes to downtown and Rainey for the nights, an easy shot to the ACL shuttle picture, direct highway access (71/183) toward COTA for race days, and a driveway that means you’re not fighting event parking. October weather
This is the payoff month: highs typically in the 80s early in the month easing toward the 70s, sunshine, and evenings that finally justify a backyard. Pack one warm layer for late-month nights and rain gear for the odd front — ACL has had both dust and mud years.
